Four netted by ICAC for alleged airline cargo graft
2002-6-14
The ICAC arrested two airline freight officers for allegedly receiving monthly bribe payments and free entertainment from a forwarding company for awarding cargo spaces on aircraft.
Also netted in an operation mounted on Wednesday (June 12) were the wife of one of the freight officers arrested and the manager of the forwarding company.
The ICAC's operation arose from a corruption complaint.
It was alleged that since May 1999, a senior freight officer of an airline's subsidiary had been receiving $8,000 each month from a forwarding company for securing cargo spaces.
The bribe was allegedly increased to $10,000 each month starting from August 2000.
Investigations also revealed that in order to avoid detection, the senior freight officer had allegedly used his wife as a vehicle to receive the corrupt payments.
Investigations further alleged that the forwarding company had offered free entertainment, including karaoke and nightclub escorts, to the airline staff for reserving cargo spaces.
The arrestees have been released on ICAC bail, pending further inquiries.
