Jockey wanted by ICAC for allegedly accepting bribe for providing racing tips
2002-7-2
On the application of the ICAC, the Eastern Court today (Tuesday) issued a warrant for the arrest of a jockey to face prosecution for allegedly accepting a bribe to provide horse racing tips.
John Francis EGAN, 34, faces one count of corruption charge. It is alleged that EGAN, while being an agent, namely a club-retained jockey acting for a Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) licensed horse trainer, had accepted a sum of money from a horse owner in J anuary this year.
The alleged bribe money was said to be an inducement to or reward for EGAN to pass horse racing tips to the horse owner in relation to a horse race held in January this year.
While under investigation for alleged bribery, EGAN was required to surrender his travel document to the ICAC under Section 17A of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance.
EGAN subsequently applied to the court to have his travel document returned in March this year.
The court allowed his application on the condition that he must re-surrender his travel document to the ICAC by June 30, 2002. The court also granted the jockey bail of $250,000 in his own recognizance.
EGAN failed to re-surrender his travel document to the ICAC by June 30, 2002 and cannot be located.
Anyone who has information on EGAN's whereabouts or any other information which may lead to his arrest is urged to contact the ICAC on its 24-hour hotline 2526 6366. Information received will be treated in the strictest confidence.
