2002-7-5
A former property agent was today (Friday) sentenced to three years' imprisonment at District Court for offering bribes totalling more than $1.7 million to a public listed company's former executive in relation to property investment of the company and it s associated companies.
Ng Kai-ming, 38, formerly employed by Chong Hing Group, was today found guilty of two counts of offering advantages.
Judge Day said an immediate custodial sentence was imposed as the corruption offences committed by the defendant removed the level playing field for businesses in Hong Kong.
The court heard that between September and December 1997, Ng had offered a total of over $1.7 million in bribes to Chau Chok-ming, former project manager of the Property Division of Easyknit International Holdings Limited (Easyknit).
The bribes were for Chau to recommend Ng to handle the purchases of various properties by Easyknit and its associated companies, Mark Profit Development Limited and Grand Profit Development Limited.
Chau was earlier charged with accepting bribes from Ng and Chung Shun Property Agency's former property agent, Wong Yuk-sim.
Chau was sentenced to 18 months' jail in October last year after pleading guilty, while Wong, 50, is scheduled to face trial on August 12, 2002 for a bribery offence.
The prosecution was today represented by Francis Burkett on a fiat, assisted by ICAC officer Tim So.
