2002-8-16

A former debt collector, charged by the ICAC for allegedly accepting an advantage for delaying to collect a $510,000 debt from a company owner, appeared in Eastern Magistracy today (Friday).

Wong Chuen, 31, now casual worker, today pleaded not guilty to one count of accepting an advantage, and one of blackmail.

Magistrate Mr Bruce McNair adjourned the case until September 6, 2002 for a pre-trial review. Trial date has yet to be fixed.

Wong Chuen was entrusted by Sing May Garment Factory Limited (Sing May) to pursue an outstanding debt of $510,000 from Wong Chi-kin, owner of Technic Full Company.

One of the charges alleged that Wong Chuen had accepted $3,000 from Wong Chi-kin on September 7, 2001 for delaying in his collection of the debt owed to Sing May by Wong Chi-kin.

Wong Chuen was also alleged to have made an unwarranted demand of $3,000 from Wong Chi-kin with menaces on August 22, 2001.

The defendant was granted cash bail of $3,000. He was ordered to reside at his reported address, not to leave Hong Kong, and not to contact prosecution witnesses.

The prosecution was today represented by ICAC officer Danny Chan.
