'Meaningful Turn to a Challenging Graft-fighting Mission’

2002-8-24

The ICAC Commissioner, Mr Ambrose Lee Siu-kwong, in his debut contribution to the ICAC corporate website, shares with the public his feelings after taking up the top post at the anti-graft agency.

In the column Commissioner Online , Mr Lee says it is a tall order to continue upholding the good reputation of the ICAC, which has successfully established itself as a formidable agency after two decades of hard work.

In his article entitled “Meaningful Turn to a Challenging Graft-fighting Mission”, the Commissioner pledges to carry out his duties in an impartial and faithful manner.

“The ICAC will never waver from its mission of fighting corruption without fear or favour. With a clear conscience, I am always at ease with different opinions and criticisms.”

In post for less than two months, the Commissioner has been deeply impressed by the professionalism, team spirit and, above all, the sense of mission of his colleagues, not to mention the strict discipline and a rigorous checks and balances system.

He also notes that as a law enforcement officer throughout his career, he appreciates the immense challenge in investigating corruption, which by nature is secretive.

He reveals that public confidence in the ICAC continues to gain momentum, with the number of in-person complaints during the first six months of this year jumping by over 20 per cent. The percentage of complainants who identified themselves also hit a rec ord high of 72 per cent in the same period.

Mr Lee calls on the public to continue to scrutinise the work of the ICAC, appraise its performance and give their valuable advice to the Commission.

The new Commissioner Online article has been uploaded onto the ICAC corporate website ( http://www.icac.org.hk ) for public access.
