Contractor charged for allegedly offering bribes for tendering information over construction projects

A company director was today (Wednesday) charged by the ICAC and brought to court for allegedly offering bribes for obtaining tendering information in relation to a number of construction projects.
Law Ping-man, 40, director of Chun Wo Construction and Engineering Ltd., appeared at Eastern Magistracy this afternoon on three counts of offering an advantage to an agent under Section 9(2)(a) of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance.
No plea was taken. Magistrate Mr David Dufton adjourned the case to January 22, 2003 for mention. The defendant was granted bail of $500,000 in cash, and was ordered not to leave Hong Kong, surrender his travel documents, and not to interfere with prose cution witnesses.
The charges alleged Law of offering unspecified sums of money to staff of The Wharf (Holdings) Limited (Wharf) for the latter to provide tendering information and assistance for construction contracts in relation to three Wharf projects.
Such projects were respectively located at Tsuen Wan Lot No.17, Tuen Mun Lot No. 386, and Bellagio Phase II.
The alleged offences took place between January 1998 and December 2002.
The prosecution was today represented by Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Kevin Zervos, assisted by ICAC officer Lo Cheuk-wa.
