Policeman sentenced for accepting bribes to 'fix up' blackmail and triad investigation

A Detective Police Constable, charged by the ICAC, was today (Wednesday) sentenced at Kowloon City Magistracy for accepting bribes from a defendant in a police case for "fixing up" the police investigation.
Li Po-kwok, 39, was earlier found guilty of one count of public servant accepting an advantage.
Li was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, and fined $5,000 by Magistrate Mr Abu Bakar bin Wahab.
The court heard that on February 21, 2002, Yuen Chi-wing was arrested by the Police for alleged offences of blackmail and claiming to be a triad member.
Yuen was subsequently charged and brought to court. He sought assistance from Li whilst on court bail.
Li told Yuen that he was acquainted with police officers in charge of Yuen's case, and undertook to gather information about the Police investigation.
The court heard that during a monitored meeting on March 5, 2002, Li accepted $5,000 marked money from Yuen, with an undertaking that he would arrange for one of the officers in charge of the investigation to talk to him.
After taking the money, Li was arrested by ICAC officers. The marked money was recovered from Li.
The prosecution was today represented by Government Counsel Marco Li, assisted by ICAC officer Steven Lam.
