ICAC launches video contest to foster positive values in youth

2003-9-10

The ICAC has kicked off the “ Snapshots of Life ” Contest designed to encourage secondary school students to explore positive values in life through video production.

The “ Secondary Schools Video Clip Project ”, funded by the Quality Education Fund, is now open for entries from schools.

Participating schools are required to produce a 10-minute video on one of the following themes -- trustworthiness, self-respect and responsibility, fair competition, obedience to the law, values beyond money, ethical dilemmas and the perils of corruption.

ICAC’s Acting Chief Education and Mass Media Officer, Winnie Yip Hau-yi, said, “The Commission has attached immense importance to moral education for youth as the integrity of our younger generation is crucial to the maintaining of a clean society in Hong Kong.

“This project is one of our initiatives to promote positive values amongst the youth, to prepare them to better resist the temptations of corruption in future.”

Ms Yip added that a similar project held in the last academic year attracted enthusiastic response from students.

“Multi-media productions has proved to be a useful tool for moral education. Through the process of theme selection, script writing, shooting and classroom discussions, students could deeply reflect on the positive values in life,” said Ms Yip.

An independent panel will shortlist 15 teams to participate in the competition based on the entries submitted before the deadline on October 10.

Two preparatory workshops will be held for participating teams in the next few months to sharpen their technical skills and explore various approaches to develop moral education activities based on the video.

The closing ceremony of the project will be held in July next year when eight awards will be granted to students for best works such as script-writing, shooting and acting.

All the 27 video clips from last academic year's project will soon be uploaded to the moral education website

( www.icac.org.hk/me ) run by the ICAC.

To date, more than 600 items have been posted on the website, which has served as a useful resource centre for moral educators since it was launched last year.

Meanwhile, a VCD containing 10 productions of the winners has recently been sent to schools for their use in moral education classes.
