2003-9-21

The Commissioner of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), Mr Raymond Wong Hung-chiu, today (Sunday) led a delegation to visit the authorities in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing.

This is Mr Wong's first official visit to the Mainland in his capacity as the head of the ICAC.

"During the visit, we will exchange experiences with the Mainland authorities on the latest development of anti-corruption work," Mr Wong said.

The delegation will first visit Shanghai to meet officials of the Shanghai Municipal People's Procuratorate, the Supervisory Committee, and the Public Security Bureau.

In Guangzhou, apart from the Guangdong Provincial People's Procuratorate (GDPP), the delegation will also call on the Guangdong Public Security Bureau and the Guangdong Supervision Bureau.

In Beijing, Mr Wong and other senior ICAC representatives will visit the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, the Supreme People's Procuratorate, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Supervision, and the Office of the Gover nment of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in Beijing.

The delegation will also call on the National Development and Reform Commission, and the State Bureau for Letters and Calls for the first time.

The ICAC has maintained good co-operation with the Mainland counterparts in fighting cross-boundary corruption. In recent years, ICAC Commissioners have been paying regular visits to the Mainland procuratorates.

A Mutual Case Assistance Scheme has been in place between the ICAC and GDPP to enable mutual assistance in interviewing voluntary witnesses relating to corruption investigations in each other's jurisdiction.

On the educational front, the ICAC last year arranged more than 280 talks on Hong Kong's anti-corruption work for a record number of over 8,700 Mainland officials visiting Hong Kong.

The ICAC delegation, which comprises Mrs Susan Mak Lok Suet-ling, Director of Community Relations; Mr Ryan Wong Sai-chiu, Assistant Director of Operations; and Mrs Jean Au Yeung Lui Miu-kwan, Assistant Director of Corruption Prevention, will return to Hon g Kong on September 27 (Saturday).
