A manageress of a freight company was today (Tuesday) sentenced to two years' imprisonment at District Court for offering regular bribe payments totalling $332,000 to a former airline employee for reserving cargo space on aircraft.

Wei Show-ying, 45, manageress of Columbus Express (H.K.) Limited (Columbus Express), today pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to offer advantages to an agent.

The court ordered that two other charges which alleged the defendant of conspiracy to use document with intent to deceive her principal be left on file.

In sentencing, Judge Wong said an immediate custodial sentence was warranted, in view of the adverse impact bribery offences would have on a society.

The judge added that the sentence was reduced to two years from the starting point of three years, taking into account the defendant's guilty plea and her clear record.

The charges stated that Wei had conspired with Cheng Chong-shing, a senior freight officer of Qantas Freight Hong Kong affiliated with Qantas Airways Limited, to offer Cheng a monthly sum of $8,000 for him to reserve more cargo space for Columbus Express.

The monthly bribe payment was later increased to $10,000.

The bribery offences took place between May 1999 and June 2002.

The prosecution was today represented by Government Counsel Richard Ma, assisted by ICAC officer Phoebe Saesam.
