2003-11-16
The ICAC today (Sunday) reminds voters and candidates to remain vigilant against any corrupt and illegal practices as District Council (DC) Election draws near.
“The ICAC has so far received 216 complaints in relation to the DC Election, which mainly concern the publishing of false or misleading statement about a candidate, bribing electors and others at election as well as publishing election advertisement with f alse claim of support,” ICAC’s Programme Co-ordinator (Elections) Miss Rosaline Cheung Oi-lung said.
“Voters and candidates should stay alert of these problem-prone areas and report to the ICAC on any suspected irregularities,” she added.
To enhance public awareness of the importance of upholding a clean and fair election, the ICAC has launched a territory-wide publicity campaign with community involvement since mid-August, Miss Cheung said.
“Eye-catching posters entitled “ Don’t be blinded by bribes ” can now be seen in every corner of the territory, thanks to the support of various public organisations, private companies and public transport operators.”
Apart from posters displayed in Mass Transit Railway stations, Kowloon-Cantoon Railway’s East Rail stations and Light Rail vehicles, other transport operators including buses, trams, maxi-cabs and taxis have carried advertisements and stickers with the “ Support Clean DC Election ” message.
Announcement of Public Interest on “ Support Clean DC Election ” has been shown on video walls in major shopping malls.
Meanwhile, the ICAC has set up a 24-hour election hotline 2920 6530 for public enquiries in relation to the election.
Most of the enquiries received through the hotline so far concern bribery of electors, treating and election advertising.
Complaints about suspected corrupt and illegal conduct in the election can be made through the 24-hour ICAC report hotline at 2526 6366, or ICAC’s regional offices.
