Three postal staff charged for alleged theft over bogus credit card transactions

2003-11-18

Three officers of the Hongkong Post were today (Tuesday) charged by the ICAC for their alleged roles in misappropriating cash proceeds totalling over $35,000 by arranging bogus credit card transactions.

Mak Cheuk-sing, 43, Ching Yim-fong, 35, and Fong Chin-wai, 46, all Postal Officers attached to the Cheung Sha Wan Post Office, will appear in separate cases in North Kowloon Magistracy at 9:30 am tomorrow (Wednesday) on a total of 18 theft offences.

The case arose from a referral from the Hongkong Post, alleging that some postal staff might have accepted advantages to connive at a scam to obtain cash proceeds through bogus credit card transactions.

ICAC inquiries alleged that the defendants had, on a number of occasions, pocketed cash from their tills by replacing the cash sums with credit card payment slips of identical amounts.

Mak faced three counts of stealing a total of $12,900 from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Ching was charged with nine counts of stealing a total of $15,600, while Fong faced six counts of stealing a total of $7,425.

The alleged offences took place between January 2001 and March 2002.

The defendants have been released on ICAC bail, pending their court appearances tomorrow.
