12 months for villa operator offering bribes to policeman

2003-12-2

A villa operator who ran his business in Shamshuipo was today (Tuesday) jailed for 12 months at North Kowloon Magistracy for offering bribes to a policeman for information on Police's anti-vice raids.

Tang Hon-ki, 38, charged by the ICAC, was today found guilty of one count of conspiracy for a public servant to accept advantages, contrary to Section 4(2)(a) of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance.

Magistrate Mr Douglas Yau said he saw no mitigating factor for giving discounts to the starting point of 12 months.

The court heard that during the course of a corruption inquiry in March this year, ICAC officers arrested Tang and Senior Police Constable Yeung Wing, whom were found together inside a van at Kweilin Street, Shamshuipo.

While interviewed under caution by ICAC officers, Tang admitted that Yeung had been providing him information on Police anti-vice raids in Shamshuipo since February this year.

In return, Tang had on three to four occasions, deposited sums of money ranging from $500 - $600 to $1,000 into Yeung's Hong Kong Jockey Club telebet account, through a person nicknamed "Yam Shuk", the court was told.

ICAC inquiries revealed that Yeung's telebet account showed records of cash deposits of $500, $600 and $1,000 between February 16 and March 15, 2003, the court was told.

The prosecution was today represented by Newman Wong on a fiat, assisted by ICAC officer Kinte Chan.
