2004-5-4
Six persons, including a Detective Police Sergeant, have been arrested by the ICAC for alleged bribery and perverting the course of public justice in connection with a police investigation of suspected criminal damage and extortion through triad involveme nt.
Apart from the police officer, a businessman, a decoration worker and three suspected triad members were also arrested.
ICAC enquiries revealed that a series of damages were caused to a shop operated by the businessman, and extortion was suspected.
While the matter was being investigated by the Police, it was alleged that the businessman, through the decoration worker, sought assistance from the Police Sergeant to avoid the extortion or further damages caused to the shop.
Inquiries revealed that the Police Sergeant, knowing that the case was being investigated by the Police, had allegedly approached his associates, believed to be triad members, to "settle" the matter.
It was alleged that the Police Sergeant had solicited a bribe payment from the businessman as rewards for his assistance.
The suspects were arrested last night after they had allegedly distributed among themselves $110,000 cash, being bribe payment offered by the businessman. The cash was seized by ICAC officers.
Inquiries are continuing.
