Senior C&E officer and five others arrested for alleged corruption

The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has arrested six persons, including a Senior Superintendent of the Customs and Excise Department (C&E), for suspected bribery offences under the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance.

Also arrested in an operation codenamed " Jiujiang ", which commenced on Tuesday (May 10), were the chairman and an associate director of a private detective company; a senior executive of a recording industry association; and two other persons.

The ICAC investigation arose from information, which alleged a senior C&E officer of accepting advantages.

ICAC enquiries revealed that the arrested Senior Superintendent of C&E had allegedly accepted bribes from the chairman and an associate director of a private detective company for providing the latter with confidential C&E information, and referring busin ess to them.

It was alleged that the arrested Senior Superintendent of C&E had also accepted a number of unauthorized loans from a senior executive of a recording industry association.

The arrested Senior Superintendent of C&E was further alleged of using a false receipt to claim reimbursement of expenses under the Long and Meritorious Service Travel Award Scheme.

C&E has rendered full assistance to the ICAC during its investigation.

ICAC enquiries are continuing.
