Six face court for attempting to deceive URA compensation
2005-6-7
Six persons, charged by the ICAC in five separate cases, today (Tuesday) appeared before the Kowloon City Magistracy for attempting to deceive the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) for compensation totalling $612,000.
Chan Wai-kuen, 31; Au Mui, 55; Wong Pui-ning, 54, Lee Chi-keung, 55; So Yau-chung, 49; each pleaded not guilty to one count of attempted fraud. Lam Chor-wah, 40, denied three similar charges.
Magistrate Mr Ernest Lin adjourned Chan’s case to July 25, 2005 for pre-trial review, and granted the defendant cash bail of $20,000.
The remaining five defendants had their cases adjourned until July 19, 2005 for pre-trial reviews. Au, Wong, Lee and So were each granted cash bail of $10,000, while Lam was released on $50,000 cash bail.
All defendants were ordered not to interfere with prosecution witnesses and not to leave Hong Kong.
The charges alleged that the defendants had attempted to induce URA to grant them cash compensations at an amount larger than they were entitled to claim.
ICAC investigation alleged that the defendants had fraudulently posed as live-in tenants at premises at Reclamation Street, an URA redevelopment project, with a view to making false claims of compensation.
Had the URA believed their declarations were genuine, it would have granted a total of $612,000 in cash compensation to the defendants.
The alleged offences took place between October 18, 2002 and September 5, 2003.
The prosecution was today represented by ICAC officer Bryan Chong.
