Kwun Tong District Councillors arrested for alleged false claims of subsidies

2005-6-9

The ICAC has arrested 12 persons, including four members of the Kwun Tong District Council (KTDC), for their alleged roles in making false claims of District Council subsidies totalling about $260,000.

Also arrested in the operation yesterday (Wednesday) were two Councillor Assistants and two former Councillor Assistants, as well as four chairpersons and office bearers of different organisations operated in Kwun Tong District.

The ICAC investigation arose from a corruption complaint in relation to the approval of KTDC subsidies. Subsequent inquiries revealed the alleged false claims.

It was alleged that the arrestees, in claiming subsidies for a number of district activities, had submitted quotations and receipts which were suspected to be false.

These accounting documents were purportedly issued by a number of contractors which had either ceased operation or did not exist, while the amount in some of the receipts were inflated.

It was believed that the alleged false claims amounted to about $260,000.

Enquiries are continuing.
