Policeman charged for alleged bribery and blackmail

2005-6-22

The ICAC has charged a Detective Senior Police Constable for allegedly taking a $10,000 bribe from a man for not prosecuting him for a suspected deception offence, and blackmailing another person to collect the bribe for him.

Yiu Shu-pui, 43, will appear in Kowloon City Magistracy at 9:30 am tomorrow (Thursday) on one count of public servant accepting an advantage, contrary to Section 4(2)(a) of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance, and one of blackmail.

The ICAC commenced inquiry after receiving a corruption complaint against Yiu on April 12 this year, and prompt action was then taken to apprehend Yiu on the same day.

The corruption charge alleges Yiu of accepting $10,000 from a man on April 12 this year as a reward for abstaining from taking appropriate action against him in respect of an offence under the Theft Ordinance.

Yiu is also alleged of making an unwarranted demand with menaces to a victim on April 12 this year, requiring the victim to collect the bribe for him at Chung Hau Street, Ho Man Tin.

Yiu has been released on ICAC bail, pending his court appearance tomorrow.
