Two cleaning supervisors arrested for alleged corruption, exploitation and fraud
2005-8-10
The ICAC has arrested two supervisors of a cleaning and pest control company for allegedly demanding bribes from workers for continuous employment, and defrauding the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) over the wages paid to workers.
During the operation code-named " Jade Lake ", which commenced yesterday (Tuesday), 70 workers under the supervision of the arrestees and who allegedly fell victim to their scheme were interviewed.
The ICAC investigation arose from a number of corruption complaints, alleging that some employees of a cleaning and pest control company contracted by FEHD might have accepted advantages from workers for assisting them in securing continuous employment.
ICAC enquiries revealed that the arrested supervisors, without the knowledge of their employer, had allegedly demanded $650 to $1,900 from each worker under their charge, to be deducted from his or her monthly salary, and threatened to terminate the emplo yment if the worker did not comply.
The arrestees were also alleged of falsifying receipts of the cleaning and pest control company, and required the workers to sign on those receipts to defraud FEHD over the wages paid to them.
Both FEHD and the cleaning and pest control company offered full assistance to the ICAC investigation.
Enquiries are continuing.
