2005-9-5

A delegation led by the Commissioner of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC), Mr Raymond Wong Hung-chiu, will visit anti-corruption agencies and other authorities on the Mainland to foster ties in the fight against cross-boundary corruptio n.

Mr Wong said: "The ICAC has maintained close liaison with Mainland procuratorates on both operational and educational fronts.

"During the visit, we will exchange experiences with the Mainland authorities on the latest development of anti-corruption work. Apart from procuratorates and other authorities in Beijing, we will also pay visits to procuratorates in Henan Province."

The delegation will start their visit in Beijing today (Monday), where it will meet officials from the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, the Ministry of Supervision, and the Ministry of Public Security.

Meanwhile, Mr Wong will also attend the 22nd Congress on the Law of the World held in the capital.

In Henan Province, the delegation will meet officials of various anti-corruption authorities to exchange experiences on anti-corruption work.

Since 1988, a Mutual Case Assistance Scheme has been in place between the ICAC and the Guangdong Provincial People's Procuratorate to enable mutual assistance in interviewing witnesses relating to corruption cases in each other's jurisdiction. The scheme has proved to be effective in facilitating co-operation in tackling cross-boundary corruption.

On the educational front, the ICAC last year arranged 200 talks on Hong Kong's anti-corruption work for over 7,000 Mainland officials visiting Hong Kong.

Accompanying Mr Wong on his visit are Mr Thomas Chan Chi-sun, Director of Corruption Prevention; Ms Julie Mu Fee-man, Assistant Director of Community Relations; and Mr Ricky Chu Man-kin, Acting Assistant Director of Operations.
