2006-3-10

An integrity reading project for youth, organised by the ICAC and participated by a record number of 225,000 students, today concluded with the launch of a special publication with contributions from over 100 writers and celebrities on the themes of integ rity and positive values.

Mr Louis Cha, a renowned writer and a former member of the ICAC's Citizens Advisory Committee on Community Relations, has contributed a foreword to the publication on the themes of anti corruption and rule of law.

Launching the publication this afternoon, ICAC's Director of Community Relations, Mrs Erika Hui Lam Yin-ming, said the success of this project –'96 "Integrity Enhancement" Publication and E-Reading Students Participation Programme - reflected the concerted efforts of various organisations, writers and celebrities in promoting a healthy and positive life for young people.

The Programme, jointly organised by the ICAC, the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education, Commission on Youth and the Hong Kong Writers Association, consists of three components - an online reading scheme, an essay competition and the production of the "Integrity Enhancement" Publication.

Under the online reading scheme, articles on positive values have been uploaded onto the ICAC website on a daily basis between October and December last year, to encourage a healthy reading culture amongst students.

Over 225,000 students from more than 800 primary and secondary schools have joined this scheme.

Meanwhile, the essay writing competition launched last October has attracted entries from over 150,000 students from 550 primary and secondary schools.

Today seven students received grand awards for their outstanding entries while 216 students were presented with merit awards.

To further promote positive values in youth through reading, 15,000 copies of the "Integrity Enhancement" Publication have been distributed to all primary and secondary schools, universities, youth organisations and public libraries. An on-line version h as also been uploaded onto ICAC website ( http://www.icac.org.hk ) for public access.

Also officiating at today's launching ceremony were Chairman of the Commission on Youth, Mr Philemon Choi Yuen-wan; President of the Hong Kong Writers Association, Ms Chu Lien-fan; and Convenor of Publicity Sub-committee of the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education, Miss Lau Man-man.
