ICAC Commissioner urges enterprises to enhance corporate governance

2006-5-24

ICAC Commissioner Raymond Wong Hung-chiu called on Hong Kong companies to familiarise themselves with the laws and regulations of the places where they conduct business, and to enhance corporate governance in order to maintain their competitiveness in the global market.

Speaking at a luncheon meeting for directors of the Hong Kong Chinese Enterprises Association (HKCEA) today (Wednesday), Mr Wong said with the support of the HKCEA, the ICAC would continue to strengthen its corruption prevention work for Mainland-funded c ompanies in Hong Kong and assist them in raising corporate governance.

While many Mainland companies have used Hong Kong as the conduit to venture into the global market and tap international funds, the ICAC would step up preventive efforts in this area.

As more companies are expected to seek listing in Hong Kong, the ICAC would continue to proactively approach newly-listed firms to offer its corruption prevention services, for example, assisting them to draw up codes of conduct, organising talks and prov iding consultancy service on system control.

In 1995, the HKCEA, along with five other major chambers of commerce, joined hands with the ICAC in setting up the Hong Kong Ethics Development Centre to promote business ethics.

In recent years, the ICAC has partnered with the HKCEA in promoting business ethics through seminars and organising other activities to explore measures to strengthen system control and prevent corruption.

Since 1996, the ICAC has been invited to conduct more than 1,200 corruption prevention talks for over 45,000 employees of Mainland-funded companies.

Mr Wong said the ICAC would continue to reach out to Mainland-funded companies in Hong Kong via the HKCEA's network through seminars for its member companies listed in Hong Kong and other joint activities to promote integrity.

Also attending today's luncheon were Acting Head of Operations, Mr Francis Lee Chun-sang; Director of Corruption Prevention, Mr Thomas Chan Chi-sun; Director of Community Relations, Mrs Erika Hui Lam Yin-ming; and Assistant Director of Community Relations , Ms Julie Mu Fee-man.
