ICAC launches new electronic platform to update business community of anti-graft efforts

2006-5-31

The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) has launched a new electronic platform to keep the business community abreast of Hong Kong's latest developments in anti-corruption work.

In the inaugural issue of the e-newsletter –'96 ICAC Post, ICAC Commissioner Raymond Wong Hung-chiu stressed that one of the most important advantages enjoyed by Hong Kong was "a clean government which strives to provide a level playing field for businesses to thrive and grow".

This on-line newsletter is the Commission's latest initiative to keep businessmen and investors regularly updated on Hong Kong's anti-corruption endeavours, corruption scene and enforcement information.

It was revealed that in recent years, six out of 10 corruption reports received by the ICAC were related to the private sector. And a number of well-orchestrated corruption-facilitated commercial scams involving senior staff or management were uncovered.

The newsletter also featured a real ICAC case involving a senior executive of a US company who had pocketed millions of dollars in illegal commissions.

The ICAC will distribute the newsletter to various chambers of commerce, consulates, international research institutes and other relevant bodies locally and abroad.

Members of the public can also read the newsletter on the ICAC website (http://www.icac.org.hk).
