Duo face court for alleged bribery over food supplies to chain supermarket

Two persons, charged by the ICAC for alleged bribery in relation to food supplies to a chain supermarket, appeared in Eastern Magistracy today (Friday) in separate cases.

In the first case, Yau Kin-yi, 44, proprietor of Tai Sze Toi (International) Trading Company, pleaded not guilty to two counts of offering an advantage to an agent, contrary to Section 9(2)(b) of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance.

Magistrate Mr Allan Wyeth adjourned the case to September 25, 2006 for trial, and granted the defendant cash bail of $10,000.

The charges alleged that on two separate occasions in August 2004 and August 2005, Yau had offered an advantage, in the form of a contract and/or a favour consisting of a joint-venture agreement in relation to supply of onion, to Nguyen Van-to, an employe e of Dairy Farm Company Limited and a regional manager of Wellcome Supermarkets (Wellcome).

In return, Nguyen had allegedly showed favour to Yau in relation to the business between Wellcome and Yau.

In the second case, Chow Kam-yuen, 55, businessman, pleaded not guilty to one count of aiding and abetting a person to offer an advantage to an agent, contrary to Section 89 of the Criminal Procedures Ordinance and Section 9(2)(b) of the Prevention of Bri bery Ordinance.

Magistrate Mr Allan Wyeth adjourned the case to September 22, 2006 for trial, and granted the defendant cash bail of $5,000.

The charge alleged that between July 1 and August 31, 2005, Chow had aided and abetted a director of a trading company to offer a commission, consisting of five per cent of the selling price of Chinese sausage, to Nguyen as a reward for showing favour to the trading company in relation to its supply of Chinese sausage to Wellcome.
