2007-1-9

The ICAC Commissioner, Mrs Fanny Law Fan Chiu-fun, today (Tuesday) starts her four-day official visit in Beijing to meet senior officials of the Mainland's anti-corruption authorities and other government bodies.

"With growing social and economic ties between Hong Kong and the Mainland, it is necessary to enhance mutual understanding and co-operation in anti-corruption operation, as well as preventive education, having regard to the differences in anti-corruption laws, systems and practices on both sides," Mrs Law said.

The ICAC Commissioner, accompanied by Director of Community Relations Erika Hui Lam Yin-ming and other ICAC officers, will call on the Supreme People's Procuratorate and the Ministry of Supervision to exchange anti-corruption experience and discuss the pr ogrammes of co-operation for 2007.

The ICAC delegation will also visit the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Justice and the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council.

During her stay in Beijing, the ICAC Commissioner will also visit the Anti-Corruption and Governance Research Centre of Tsinghua University and meet a group of Mainland-based Hong Kong businessmen and some Hong Kong students.

The ICAC has maintained good co-operation with the Mainland's anti- corruption authorities. Under the Mutual Case Assistance Scheme established since 1988, the ICAC and the Mainland's procuratorate authorities have been assisting each other in interviewi ng voluntary witnesses involved in corruption cases.

In recent years, the ICAC also joined hands with the Mainland's procuratorates to produce corruption prevention guidebooks for businessmen and investors engaged in cross boundary business.

Last year, the ICAC received 200 delegations of Mainland officials visiting Hong Kong and introduced to them Hong Kong's anti-corruption strategies.
