Duo charged for alleged $800,000 bribery over property transaction

A former general manager of a property agency and a general manager of a trading company were today (Tuesday) charged by the ICAC and brought to Eastern Magistracy for allegedly offering and accepting a $800,000 bribe respectively in relation to a $240 mi llion property transaction.
Chan Ngan-lau, 47, former general manager of Centaline Property Agency Limited (Centaline), faced one holding charge of offering an advantage to an agent, contrary to Section 9(2)(a) of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance (PBO).
Co-defendant Ho Wai-jon, 50, general manager of Li & Fung (Trading) Limited, faced another holding charge of agent accepting an advantage, contrary to Section 9(1)(a) of the PBO.
No pleas were taken. Magistrate Mr Douglas Yau Tak-hong adjourned the case until September 11 for mention.
One of the charges alleged that on August 11, 2006, Chan offered $800,000 to Ho as a reward for causing Li & Fung (1937) Limited to engage Centaline as an agent in the purchase of a property in Cheung Sha Wan Road, Kowloon.
The other charge alleged Ho of accepting the bribe from Chan for the same reason.
Chan and Ho were granted cash bail of $50,000 and $10,000 respectively. They were also ordered to surrender travel documents, not to leave Hong Kong, and to report to the Police once a week.
The prosecution was today represented by ICAC officer Ben Chan.
