Part-time musical instructor of primary school charged for bribery

The ICAC has charged a part-time musical instructor of a primary school for allegedly soliciting and accepting bribes over the purchase of musical instruments for the school.

Tam Yu-leung, 34, part-time musical instructor of The Church of Christ in China Kei Wai Primary School and The Church of Christ in China Kei Wai Primary School Parent Teacher Association, faces one count of agent soliciting an advantage and one of agent a ccepting an advantage.

The defendant will appear in Kowloon City Magistracy at 9:30 am tomorrow (Friday) for plea.

At the time of the alleged offences, the defendant was responsible for deciding on the purchase of musical instruments, assessing quotations and making recommendations to the school on which supplier should be awarded the procurement order.

One of the charges alleges that on February 2, 2007, the defendant had solicited a bribe of $20,000 from the proprietor of a musical company as a reward for placing a procurement order for musical instruments with the company.

The bribe was said to be 20 per cent of the amount of the procurement order.

The other charge alleges the defendant of accepting $19,120 from the musical company proprietor on April 26, 2007 for the same reason.

The defendant has been released on ICAC bail, pending his court appearance tomorrow.
