Man charged for attempted bribery over 2007 DC Election

An unemployed man was today (Friday) charged by the ICAC for attempting to solicit and accept advantages from a candidate of the 2007 District Council (DC) Election for securing votes for the latter.
Leung Ngar-yan, 52, faces three counts of attempting to engage in corrupt conduct at an election, contrary to Section 11(1)(g) of the Elections (Corrupt and Illegal Conduct) Ordinance and Section 159G(1) of the Crimes Ordinance.
He will appear at Tuen Mun Magistracy at 9:30 am on Tuesday (November 13) for plea.
Two of the charges allege the defendant of attempting to solicit respectively an unknown amount of money and $120,000 from a candidate of the 2007 Yuen Long DC Election (Yat Chak Constituency), as an inducement to get other persons to vote for the latter at the above election.
The remaining charge alleges the defendant of attempting to accept $2,000 from the above candidate for a similar reason.
The alleged offences took place between July and August 2007.
The defendant has been released on ICAC bail, pending his court appearance next Tuesday.
