Duo face court for alleged bribery over food supplies to restaurant

A supervisor of a supplier and a supervisor of a restaurant appeared in Fanling Magistracy today (Wednesday) after being charged by the ICAC with alleged bribery in relation to meat and poultry supplies to the restaurant.

Ng Kan-wai, 55, supervisor of Best Union Company (BUC), faced four charges –'96 two counts of offering advantages to an agent, one of conspiracy for an agent to accept advantages, and one of conspiracy to offer advantages to an agent.

Co-defendant Au Yeung Wai-keung, 41, supervisor of roasted meat section of Kamboat Chinese Cuisine Company Limited, faced three charges –'96 two of agent accepting advantages, and one of conspiracy for an agent to accept advantages.

No plea was taken. Magistrate Mr Michael Jenkins transferred the case to the District Court for plea on July 8.

Two of the charges alleged that Ng had offered regular bribes and a sum of $21,360 to Au Yeung as rewards for placing orders for meat and poultry with BUC or its associated companies.

Two other charges alleged Au Yueng to have accepted regular bribes and the sum of $21,360 from Ng for the same reason.

Ng was also alleged to have conspired with a supervisor of another restaurant for the latter to accept sums of money as rewards for placing orders for meat and poultry with another food company or its associated companies.

Ng was further alleged to have conspired with another person to offer sums of money to a senior cook of a fast food restaurant chain as rewards for the senior cook forebearing from complaining about the quality of the meat and poultry supplied by BUC or i ts associated companies to his employer.

The remaining charge alleged that Au Yeung had conspired together with Ng and a cook of another restaurant for the latter to accept sums of money as rewards for referring his employer to place orders for meat and poultry with BUC or its associated compani es.

The above alleged offences were said to have taken place between March 2003 and August 2007.

Ng and Au Yeung were each granted cash bail of $50,000, and were ordered to report weekly to the Police.

The prosecution was today represented by ICAC officer Ricky Cheuk.
