Former HKU staff alleged of misconduct and pocketing over $3m worth of goods and cash

A former administrative assistant of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) was today (Friday) charged by the ICAC for alleged misconduct in public office and misappropriating over $3 million worth of goods and cash.

June Chan Sau-hung, 41, former administrative assistant of the Department of Surgery of the Faculty of Medicine of HKU, faces one count of misconduct in public office and three alternative theft charges.

The defendant will appear in Eastern Magistracy at 9:30 am on Tuesday (December 8) for transfer to the District Court for plea.

The misconduct charge alleges that between January 2004 and December 2006, the defendant, being a public officer, without reasonable excuse or justification, in the course of or in relation to her public office, wilfully and intentionally culpably miscond ucted herself.

The defendant is alleged of using two corporate credit cards of the Skills Development Centre (SDC) of HKU to make purchases and cash advance transactions for personal and private purposes.

The charge also alleges Chan of making false bank transfer slips to effect transfer of money from various bank accounts to SDC in order to settle repayments due under the two corporate cards.

The three alternative theft charges allege that during the same period of time Chan had stolen items worth about $1.6 million, and sums of cash totalling over $1.45 million.

The defendant was granted ICAC bail, pending her court appearance on Tuesday.
