Duo charged with bribery over supply of screws

A director of a screw factory and a director of an electric motor company were today (Wednesday) charged by the ICAC with bribery in relation to the supply of screws for the manufacturing of garage shutter motors.
Lai Chi-wai, 48, director of Seiko Screw Manufactory Limited (Seiko), faces one count of conspiracy for an agent to accept an advantage, contrary to Section 9(1)(a) of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance (POBO) and Section 159A of the Crimes Ordinance.
Co-defendant Tam Yuet-wah, 50, director of Countermast Limited (Countermast), faces one count of agent accepting an advantage, contrary to Section 9(1)(a) of the POBO.
The defendants will appear in Kwun Tong Magistracy at 9:30 am on Friday (April 9), pending transfer to the District Court.
Lai is alleged to have conspired together with Tam between January 2001 and September 16, 2009 for Tam to accept rebates at the rate of 10% of the sales amount of goods supplied by Seiko to Countermast as rewards for Tam to have placed purchase orders wit h Seiko for Countermast. The alleged illegal rebates were said to amount to $400,000.
Tam is alleged to have accepted $18,080 in rebates from Lai on September 16, 2009 as rewards for placing purchase orders with Seiko for Countermast.
The defendants have been released on ICAC bail, pending their court appearance on Friday.
