ICAC launches drive to keep village elections clean

2010-11-13

As the nomination period for the Village Representative (VR) Elections starts today (Saturday), the ICAC has rolled out a multi-faceted education and publicity programme to remind voters and candidates of the importance to keep the election clean and fair .

Upon submission of nomination forms, all candidates will be given a copy of an ICAC information booklet as a handy guidebook.

“The booklet highlights major provisions of the Elections (Corrupt and Illegal Conduct) Ordinance (ECICO) relating to various aspects such as nomination of candidates, electioneering, voting, election expenses and donations,” said ICAC Programme Coordinator (Elections) Ms Lily Chung Lai-tuen.

“Featuring a ‘'91Questions and Answers’ section, the booklet also offers practical tips on issues relevant to VR elections, such as attending “basin” meals, sponsoring trips and arranging free transportation for electors.”

Meanwhile, a specially designed mobile exhibition vehicle will visit over 50 rural places to drive home the “Support Clean VR Elections” message.

Apart from organising briefings for rural organisations, the ICAC also runs outdoor exhibitions, radio advertisements and a poster campaign, as well as screening a short film on public buses to reinforce the message.

Members of the public may call the Commission hotline (2920 7878) for enquiries about the ECICO. They can also download the information booklet at www.icac.org.hk/en/elections .
