Ex-manager wanted by ICAC for allegedly laundering crime proceeds

A District Court judge today (Thursday) issued a warrant for the arrest of a former deputy general manager of a construction and engineering company, who was earlier charged by the ICAC for allegedly laundering over $20 million in crime proceeds.

Ieong Wa-kong, 44, formerly employed by Companhia De Construcao E Engenharia San Meng Fai Limitada, faced one count of dealing with property known or reasonably believed to represent proceeds of an indictable offence, contrary to Section 25(1) of the Orga nised and Serious Crimes Ordinance.

The defendant was brought to Eastern Magistracy for mention on September 6 last year after being charged with the above offence. He was granted cash bail of $40,000, and was ordered not to leave Hong Kong and to report to the Police on the first day of e very month.

After his case was transferred to the District Court, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge on September 24 last year.

The defendant failed to report to the Police on May 1 this year, and did not turn up at the District Court this morning for a pre-trial review.

Judge Stanley Chan Kwong-chi issued a warrant for his arrest upon an application from the prosecution.

The charge alleged that on November 12, 2005, the defendant dealt with bank deposits totalling $20.3 million in Hong Kong, knowing or having reasonable grounds to believe that the deposits, in whole or in part, directly or indirectly represented the proce eds of an indictable offence.

The defendant was alleged to have transferred the said deposits to a bank account in Hong Kong of a company controlled by Ao Man-long, then Secretary for Transport and Public Works of the Macao Special Administrative Region.
