Response statement

2011-6-7

In response to media enquiries, an ICAC spokesman today (Tuesday) confirmed that 24 persons were arrested for alleged bribery in relation to the sale of tablet computers at an electrical appliances retail chain.

Arrested in an operation codenamed “Brightness”, which commenced last Friday (June 3), were 13 staff members of three outlets of the electrical appliances retail chain; and 11 parallel goods traders.

The ICAC commenced investigations after receiving corruption complaints.

It is suspected that the staff members of the electrical appliances retail chain had accepted bribes from the parallel goods traders as a reward for informing the latter of the availability of tablet computers and assisting them in purchasing the tablet c omputers in large quantities.

The electrical appliances retail chain rendered full assistance to the ICAC in its investigation.

All arrestees have been released on ICAC bail. Enquiries are continuing.
