2011-11-16
In response to media enquiries, an ICAC spokesman today (Wednesday) confirmed that a football player of the Hong Kong Youth Representative Team was arrested for alleged corruption in attempting to fix last night’s (November 15) match against the Russian National Youth Team at the Mong Kok Stadium.
The ICAC investigation arose from a corruption complaint.
Investigation revealed that prior to the afore-mentioned football match, the arrested football player had allegedly approached some of his team-mates to solicit their assistance in deliberately losing in the match.
The arrested footballer had allegedly attempted to offer monetary advantages to those team-mates as rewards for their help.
Investigation revealed that those players who were approached by the arrested footballer had rejected the latter’s request.
The Hong Kong Football Association rendered full assistance to the ICAC during the enquiries.
Enquiries are continuing.
