Ex-building supervisor charged with accepting $300,000 bribes

2012-3-22

A former building supervisor of a property management company has been charged by the ICAC with accepting about $300,000 in bribes from a security guard for assisting the latter in getting promotion.

Michael Day Ellenbuger, 50, formerly employed by Hong Kong Pacific Management Limited (HKP), who was charged yesterday (March 21), faces one count of agent accepting an advantage, contrary to Section 9(1)(b) of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance (POBO).

The defendant will appear in Kowloon City Magistracy at 9:30 am tomorrow (March 23) for plea.

At the material times, HKP was entrusted to provide management and security services to Hilton Tower (HT) in Tsim Sha Tsui.

While employed as a building supervisor by HKP, the defendant was posted to HT to supervise day-shift security guards including Chan Lai-yau.

The charge alleges that between August 18, 2010 and February 2011, the defendant accepted sums of money from Chan as an inducement to or a reward for showing favour to Chan in relation to her work for HKP.

The sums of money were said to amount to about $300,000 in terms of loans for assisting Chan in getting promotion.

Chan, 52, was earlier charged by the ICAC with one count of offering an advantage to an agent, contrary to Section 9(2)(a) of the POBO. She earlier pleaded guilty to the charge at Kowloon City Magistracy, and had her case adjourned until May 9 for mentio n.

HKP had rendered full assistance to the ICAC during the investigation.

The defendant has been released on ICAC bail, pending his court appearance tomorrow.
