Ex-bellboy charged with accepting illegal rebates from taxi driver

A former bellboy of a hotel has been charged by the ICAC today (Tuesday) for allegedly accepting illegal rebates from a taxi driver for referring guests to hire his long-haul services.
Lam Wai-ki, 28, a former bell attendant of The Cityview (Cityview), faces two counts of agent accepting an advantage, contrary to Section 9(1)(a) of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance.
The defendant will appear in Kowloon City Magistracy at 9:30 am on Thursday (September 6) for plea.
At the material times, the defendant worked as a bell attendant for Cityview, a hotel located in Yaumatei, Kowloon. Amongst other duties, he was responsible for arranging taxi services for hotel guests upon their requests.
One of the charges alleges that between September 1, 2010 and May 31, 2011, the defendant accepted sums of cash of unknown amount from a taxi driver as rewards for referring guests of Cityview to the latter for taxi services.
The other charge alleges that on June 19, 2011, the defendant accepted $1,000 cash from the taxi driver for the same purpose.
ICAC enquiries revealed that the sums of illegal rebates allegedly accepted by the defendant amounted to about $10,000.
Cityview has rendered full assistance to the ICAC during its investigation.
The defendant has been released on ICAC bail, pending his court appearance on Thursday.
