Duo charged with bribery and fraud over TV game show

A man has been charged by the ICAC with offering a bribe of over $46,000 to get the correct answers of a game show of now TV, with the man and his sister accused of defrauding the TV station of about $350,000 in cash prizes of the game show.

Fung Kin-fung, 29, who was charged yesterday (Monday), faces one count of conspiracy to offer an advantage to an agent, contrary to Section 9(2)(a) of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance and Section 159A of the Crimes Ordinance.

Also charged yesterday was Fung Kin-man, 28, who is the younger sister of Fung Kin-fung. The duo faces a joint charge of conspiracy to defraud, contrary to Common Law.

The defendants will appear at the Eastern Magistracy at 9:30 am tomorrow (Wednesday) for plea.

At all material times, the defendants were subscribers of now TV, which produced a live game show called “Action-to-Money” .

At each show, eight questions were asked and a cash prize of $100,000 was shared among the participants who managed to answer all questions correctly through the broadband network.

One of the charges alleges that between July and August 2011, Fung Kin-fung conspired with a participant of the game show to offer a bribe to an assistant broadcast engineer employed by HKT Services Limited responsible for duties relating to the now TV ga me show as a reward for disclosing the correct answers of the game show to the participant.

The alleged bribe ranged from 65% to 70% of the winnings of the participant in the game show.

The other charge alleges that between June and December 2011, the defendants conspired together and with the assistant broadcast engineer to defraud PCCW Media Limited which operates now TV.

The defendants were alleged to have obtained the correct answers of the game show; participated and arranged two participants to participate in the game show; and won the prize money of the game show with the correct answers dishonestly obtained.

As a result, PCCW Media Limited was caused to release cash prizes to the defendants and the two participants concerned. The cash prizes were said to amount to about $350,000.

PCCW Media Limited had rendered full assistance to the ICAC during its investigation.

The defendants have been released on ICAC bail, pending their court appearance tomorrow.
