Ex-insurance consultant jailed for attempting to mislead ICAC

A former insurance consultant of a financial services company, charged by the ICAC, was today (Tuesday) sentenced to four weeks’ imprisonment at the Eastern Magistracy after being convicted of attempting to mislead the ICAC by making false statements.
Angela Sha Kit-bing, 64, a former insurance consultant of Wealth Perfect Financial Services Limited (Wealth Perfect), was found guilty of one count of knowingly attempting to mislead an ICAC officer by making false statements, contrary to Section 13B(b) o f the ICAC Ordinance and Section 159G of the Crimes Ordinance.
When delivering his verdict, Magistrate Mr Marco Li Kwok-wai remarked that the witnesses were credible, and that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt the charge against the defendant.
The court heard that at the material time, the ICAC had been conducting an investigation into an allegation that some insurance consultants of four insurance brokerage firms, including Wealth Perfect, might have used false insurance policies to deceive th ree insurance companies of sales commissions.
One of the alleged false insurance policies, handled by a former director of Wealth Perfect, was taken out by the defendant on behalf of her daughter.
When the defendant was interviewed by an ICAC officer on January 6, 2012, the defendant knowingly attempted to mislead the officer by making false statements.
The defendant told the officer that she had never purchased two cashier orders for $10,000 each from a bank for settling policy premiums of the insurance policy at issue.
The defendant also told the officer that she was not the account holder of a current account held with another bank as shown in the direct debit authorisation in respect of the insurance policy at issue.
The defendant also told the officer that she had never worked for Wealth Perfect, and that she did not know the former director of Wealth Perfect, the court was told.
The prosecution was today represented by Senior Public Prosecutor Cecilia Chan, assisted by ICAC officer Matchy Mak.
