ICAC Commissioner visits the US and Panama to update international community on HK’s anti-corruption efforts

ICAC Commissioner Simon Peh Yun-lu today (Sunday) departed for the Republic of Panama via the United States (US) to attend the 7th Annual Conference and General Meeting of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (IAACA).

At the Conference, the Commissioner will share with graft busters from around the world Hong Kong’s effective strategy and experience in controlling corruption and fostering a clean society at a plenary session on “Rule of Law, Anti-Corruption Work and an Independent Judiciary”.

He will also meet with senior officials of the Transparency International, a global civil society organisation overseeing corruption issues.

Prior to attending the Conference to be held in Panama City between November 22 and 24, Mr Peh will pay an official visit to the United States en route, to meet with US government officials, law enforcement agencies as well as international organisations.

In New York, he will call on Ms Rose Gill Hearn, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Investigation responsible for corruption investigations, and Mr Gavin Power, Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Global Compact, to exchange anti- corruption experience especially in the business sector.

In Washington, D.C., he will meet with Mr Sean M. Joyce, Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), to enhance mutual understanding and cooperation between the two law enforcement agencies, and call on Mr James Cole, Deputy Attorney General of the Departmen t of Justice, as well as other US government departments including the Department of State and the Office of Government Ethics.

In addition, the Commissioner will meet with senior officials of the World Bank and the World Justice Project to update the latter on Hong Kong’s latest efforts in integrity building and sustaining a clean business environment.

Accompanying Mr Peh during the visit are ICAC’s Director of Community Relations, Julie Mu Fee-man, and Chief Staff Officer of the Centre of Anti-Corruption Studies, Daniel So Ping-hung.

Ms Mu will also address the IAACA Conference at a workshop entitled “Anti-corruption agencies in a changing world: independence, accountability and transparency”.

The delegation will return to Hong Kong on November 27.
