ICAC chief visits Europe to foster international anti-graft exchange

ICAC Commissioner Simon Peh Yun-lu today (Thursday) commenced his duty visit to Europe to step up international exchange on anti-corruption experience with overseas law enforcement agencies and world renowned institutes.
Mr Peh will first call on the Transparency International (TI) in Berlin, Germany to meet its chair Dr Huguette Labelle and brief TI officials on Hong Kong’s latest probity situation and anti-corruption initiatives. The TI is a non-governmental organisation that monitors corruption in international development and conducts research on corruption issues worldwide.
In Berlin, Mr Peh will also visit anti-corruption authorities as well as law enforcement agencies of Germany. He will meet with the Chief Prosecutor of the Central Office Against Corruption under the Attorney General’s Office, and call on the corruption fighting and prevention divisions of the Ministry of Interior, and the Federal Criminal Police Force.
The Commissioner will then depart for Barcelona, Spain to attend a three-day Executive Committee meeting of the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities (IAACA).
The IAACA is a non-governmental international organisation formed to foster the implementation of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) and promote international cooperation in the fight against corruption. It comprises over 300 member s from anti-corruption agencies around the world, including the ICAC, and other related organisations.
As a member of the Executive Committee, Mr Peh will take part in the deliberations of the IAACA’s work plan, the review of the implementation of the UNCAC, knowledge sharing as well as, among other items, cooperation strategies among members.
The Commissioner will also take the opportunity to share Hong Kong’s experience in fighting graft with counterparts as well as representatives from the United Nations, and pay a visit to the Anti-Fraud Office of Catalonia.
Mr Peh will then fly to Geneva, Switzerland to meet with senior officials of the World Economic Forum (WEF) and brief them on the latest probity situation in Hong Kong.
Before returning to Hong Kong, Mr Peh will address a seminar held in Lausanne to present Hong Kong’s probity situation and anti-corruption strategies at the invitation of the International Institute for Management Development (IMD). He will also exchange with the Director of IMD’s World Competitiveness Center.
Accompanying Mr Peh in his visit are Julie Mu Fee-man, ICAC’s Director of Community Relations, and Daniel So Ping-hung, Chief Staff Officer of the Centre of Anti-Corruption Studies.
ICAC’s Director of Investigation Ricky Yau Shu-chun will join the Commissioner at the Executive Committee meeting of the IAACA to report on an international symposium to be organised by the ICAC next year.
The delegation will return to Hong Kong on April 5 (Saturday).
