Ex-assistant manager of logistics company charged with $1.6m airfreight order payments fraud

2018-11-14

A former assistant manager of a logistics company has been charged by the ICAC today (November 14) with defrauding the company of airfreight order payments totalling over $1.6 million.

Yim Wing-yiu, 40, former assistant manager of Great Master Logistics Company Limited (GML), faces one count of fraud, contrary to Section 16A of the Theft Ordinance.

The defendant will appear in the Eastern Magistracy on Friday (November 16) for transfer to the District Court for plea.

The case arose from a corruption complaint. Subsequent ICAC enquiries revealed the above alleged offence.

At the material time, the defendant was an assistant manager of GML in charge of its airfreight section. He was responsible for negotiating airfreight orders and awarding the orders to logistics companies.

The charge alleges that between January 3 and 28, 2014, the defendant falsely represented to GML that four logistics orders were subcontracted to another logistics company, and with intent to defraud, induced GML to settle payment of the four logistics orders with that logistics company, which resulted in benefit to the defendant or prejudice to GML.

As a result of the alleged false representation, GML had paid over $1.6 million to the above-mentioned logistics company in connection with the four logistics orders. In fact, the defendant had subcontracted those orders to a third logistics company.

GML has rendered full assistance to the ICAC during its investigation into the case.

The defendant has been released on ICAC bail, pending his court appearance on Friday.
