Duo in court over alleged bribes for jobseekers’ information

2015-3-6

Two former employees of two recruitment agencies appeared in the Eastern Magistracy today (Friday) after being charged by the ICAC for their alleged roles in a $37,000 bribes-for-jobseekers’ information scam.

The defendants, who were charged on Wednesday (March 4), were Hang Ning, 37, a former principal consultant of Global Executive Consultants Limited (GECL); and Chau Ka-yin, 33, a former consultant of another recruitment agency.

They faced four joint charges of conspiracy for an agent to accept advantage, contrary to Section 9(1)(a) of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance and Section 159A of the Crimes Ordinance.

The defendants today pleaded not guilty to the charges. Principal Magistrate Ms Bina Chainrai adjourned the case to April 20 this year for a pre-trial review.

At the material time, Hang was a principal consultant of GECL, a recruitment agency providing head-hunting services for corporations and job referral services for job candidates, while Chau was a consultant of another recruitment agency.

The charges alleged that between March 14 and November 1, 2013, Hang and Chau conspired together for Hang to accept bribes ranging from $4,000 to $18,630 from Chau as rewards for divulging to Chau the curricula vitae or personal particulars of five job candidates of GECL. The bribes allegedly accepted by Hang amounted to $37,480.

Hang and Chau were each granted cash bail of $30,000. They were also ordered not to interfere with prosecution witnesses.

GECL had rendered full assistance to the ICAC during its investigation.

The prosecution was today represented by ICAC officer Jill Law.
