Ex-manager of athletic products company charged with theft

2020-5-26

A former area manager of an athletic products company has been charged by the ICAC today (May 26) with stealing over $5,000 from the company by falsely inputting discount codes into its computerised cashier system.

Chan Wai-keung, 46, former area manager of New Balance Athletic Shoes (Hong Kong) Limited (New Balance HK), faces two counts of theft, contrary to Section 9 of the Theft Ordinance.

The defendant will appear at the Tuen Mun Magistrates’ Courts on Thursday (May 28) for plea.

The case arose from a corruption complaint. Subsequent ICAC enquiries revealed the above alleged offences.

At the material time, the defendant was an area manager of New Balance HK responsible for supervising the operation of five to six stores, including two outlets in Yuen Long and Tung Chung, and the salespersons working there.

New Balance HK’s salespersons were required to use a computerised cashier system to process sales transactions. By inputting different discount codes into the system, a salesperson could offer an additional discount to a customer making bulk purchases, or other special discount as appropriate.

The charges allege that between April 1, 2017 and November 15, 2018, the defendant stole two sums of money totalling over $5,000 from the aforesaid outlets in Yuen Long and Tung Chung.

It is alleged that various discount codes were inputted into the computerised cashier system for a total of 15 sales transactions despite that discounts were not offered to the customers concerned.

New Balance HK has rendered full assistance to the ICAC during its investigation into the case.

The defendant has been released on ICAC bail, pending his court appearance on Thursday.
