Justice Served

In September 1978, the Attorney General (now the Secretary for Justice) decided to split the Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market case into three separate trials. Twenty-four serving and former police officers (with one absconded) and two officers of the then Commerce & Industry Department were charged with conspiracy to pervert the cause of public justice.

The first trial

Number of defendants : 19

Occupation : Police Sergeants / Police Constables

  • 14 were found guilty and sentenced to imprisonment terms ranging from 19 to 24 months.
  • One was found guilty but was acquitted in a subsequent appeal.
  • Four had no case to answer.

The second trial

Number of defendants : 4

Occupation : Serving and former Police Constables

  • Two were found guilty. Each was sentenced to two years’ jail.
  • Two were acquitted.

The third trial

Number of defendants : 2

Occupation : Officers of the Commerce & Industry Department

  • Both were found guilty. One was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment and the other three years.
