Managerial staff of 43 National Sports Associations (NSAs) in Hong Kong today (January 19) completed the ICAC’s first-ever integrity training tailored for NSAs in a bid to help enhance the sporting sector’s awareness of corruption prevention and strengthen the governance of the sector.

A then assistant manager of a telecommunications company and three others were earlier charged by the ICAC for allegedly concealing the assistant manager’s interest in a contractor to secure fibre installation service orders worth totalling $180,000. The assistant manager was today (January 19) laid with an additional perversion charge for allegedly making a false representation about declaring his role in the contractor to the company during the anti-graft agency’s investigation.

The Court of Appeal (CA) of the High Court handed down a written judgment in respect of the misconduct in public office (MIPO) and fraud case concerning college staff of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), allowing the appeal against the acquittals of three defendants and ordering a re-trial of the case at the District Court.

A Resident Doctor of a public hospital, charged by the ICAC with fraud revealed in the course of a corruption investigation, was today sentenced to 160 hours of community service at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts for deceiving the Hospital Authority (HA) into paying him special honorarium of over $110,000 by making false representations about his extra services performed on a number of occasions at another public hospital.

A man charged by the ICAC was today (January 15) sentenced to two months’ imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, after admitting at the Fanling Magistrates’ Courts that he had reposted on his social media page an online post which incited others to boycott the 2023 District Council Ordinary Election (DC Election) during the election period.

The ICAC had earlier charged a then property officer of a property management company and a renovation contractor as a corruption investigation revealed that they had conspired together to deceive the Incorporated Owners (IO) of a private residential building in To Kwa Wan into awarding a water pipe replacement project to the contractor by using false quotations. The property officer was today (January 10) convicted of conspiracy to defraud at the Kowloon City Magistrates’ Courts while the renovation contractor, who pleaded guilty earlier, was jailed for two months and two weeks.

Two sales representatives of the advertising department of a newspaper company, charged by the ICAC, admitted at the District Court today (January 9) their offering of bribes totalling about $88,000 to a supervisor after receiving commissions of a total of over $260,000 for securing event sponsorships.

A then Assistant General Manager of the Hongkong Post (HKPost), charged by the ICAC, was sentenced at the District Court today (January 5) after being convicted of misconduct in public office (MIPO) for concealing his conflicting interest when handling the tendering exercise of an online platform redevelopment project worth about $4.2 million which was subsequently awarded to a contractor operated by his cousin and cousin in-law.

The ICAC had earlier charged a property buyer with fraud after its corruption investigation revealed that the buyer had allegedly induced a bank not to demand repayment of a mortgage loan of over $8 million granted with a loan-to-value (LTV) ratio of 80 per cent for meeting the owner-occupied requirement by concealing that the property was leased out. Upon further legal advice from the Department of Justice, the buyer’s son was charged yesterday (December 27).

In the course of ICAC’s investigation into corruption cases in respect of sub-contracts of the Three-Runway System Project (3RS Project) of the Hong Kong International Airport, it was revealed that a reclamation sand supplier had been allegedly involved in bribery and other offences. One of the operators of the supplier was jailed for 14 months after admitting at the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts today (December 27) that he had stolen $350,000 from the company.
