The ICAC will kick start its annual opinion survey next Monday (November 27) to gauge public attitudes towards a probity society and their understanding of Hong Kong’s anti-graft work.

A couple and a relative of them were charged by the ICAC today (November 22) with fraud and conspiracy to defraud after a corruption investigation revealed that the trio allegedly made false representations about their injuries in traffic accidents to deceive the Social Welfare Department (SWD) into granting them Traffic Accident Victim Assistance (TAVA) payments totalling about $600,000 and to defraud five insurers into releasing medical compensation of over $310,000 to the wife.

A former security guard of a public housing estate, charged by the ICAC, today (November 22) admitted at the Kowloon City Magistrates’ Courts that she had offered “laisees” totalling $4,000 to her supervisor for arranging her to a post she preferred.

A then director and a then senior sales manager of two air-conditioning maintenance contractors, charged by the ICAC, were today (November 21) respectively sentenced to two years and one and a half years in jail at the District Court for offering bribes of over HK$1 million to a then director of a hotel group for air-conditioning maintenance contracts of a hotel in Macao worth totalling around HK$34 million.

A former security supervisor of a public housing estate and her subordinate security guard were charged by the ICAC yesterday (November 20) for allegedly receiving and giving “laisees” for arranging the security guard to work at her preferred post.

A then contract customer service assistant of the Transport Department (TD), charged by the ICAC, was today (November 20) sentenced to a 120-hour community service order at the Shatin Magistrates’ Courts for accessing a computer system of the TD dishonestly to process 15 applications for license renewal and other services for a friend during the pandemic. The offence was revealed in the course of a corruption investigation.

A Postman, charged by the ICAC, was today (November 16) handed a 180-hour community service order at the Shatin Magistrates’ Courts for using false parking permits to occupy a parking space at a car park of a Government Offices Building for free for about six months. The offences were revealed in the course of a corruption investigation.

The ICAC earlier charged a former principal engineer of a government works consultant after a corruption investigation revealed that he had conspired to use false independent checking certificates and a false Ecological Appraisal Report in relation to three landslip prevention projects to deceive three government departments. The former principal engineer was today (November 15) sentenced at the District Court to two years’ imprisonment.

A former employee of a publishing firm, charged by the ICAC with fraud and offences under the anti-bribery law, today (November 14) admitted at the District Court that he had deceived the firm into making service payments totalling about $380,000 to various contractors by fabricating invoices in relation to the republication of books and the relocation works of the firm. The offences were revealed in the course of a corruption investigation by the Commission.

A former kindergarten teacher, charged by the ICAC, was today (November 14) handed a 120-hour community service order at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts for bribing the principal of the kindergarten for issuing a false employment proof to support her overseas tourist visa application.
