A candidate of the 2020 Legislative Council General Election (2020 LegCo Election) for the Social Welfare Constituency, charged by the ICAC, was today (February 22) sentenced to two months’ imprisonment at the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts for lodging a false election return to the Registration and Electoral Office (REO) and attempted to defraud the REO of election expenses totalling $24,000.

Two defeated candidates of the 2019 District Council Ordinary Election (2019 DC Election), charged by the ICAC in separate cases, were sentenced to 160 hours of community service order at the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts today (February 22) for failing to lodge election returns as required by the Elections (Corrupt and Illegal Conduct) Ordinance (ECICO).

The ICAC has earlier charged 18 people with conspiracy to defraud and money laundering, revealed during the course of a corruption investigation, for allegedly taking part in a dummy insurance agents scam to defraud two insurers of commissions by making false representations that they had handled a few hundred insurance policies. The commissions involved in the scam increased to about $50 million after 19 additional charges were laid against a defendant when she appeared in the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts today (February 21).

The ICAC today (February 21) charged a candidate of the commercial vehicle driving test for medium goods vehicle with offering a bribe of $500 to an examiner of the Transport Department (TD) to get a pass after making a mistake in the test.

A former assistant engineer of a fast food restaurant chain was charged by the ICAC today (February 21) for allegedly deceiving the restaurant chain into awarding two works projects to a contractor by concealing that he was the latter’s major shareholder.

Following the enforcement actions taken by the ICAC in mid-August last year in operation “Blizzard” against suspected corruption in relation to the Three-Runway System Project (3RS Project) of the Hong Kong International Airport, eight people were charged today (February 15) for their alleged roles in accepting, offering and handling bribes totalling HK$4.3 million over works sub-contracts and materials purchase orders worth over HK$200 million in total. So far 10 defendants, including a former General Manager and a former Principal Manager of the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), were charged in relation to the scam.

A Magistrate issued warrants for the arrest of two former buying managers of a multinational groceries retailer and the operator of a toy supplier, who are wanted by the ICAC for allegedly accepting and offering bribes totalling over US$900,000 (over HK$7 million) for causing the retailer to place toy orders worth totalling over US$26 million (over HK$205 million) with the toy supplier.

A former security guard, charged by the ICAC, was today (February 10) sentenced to three months’ imprisonment at the Shatin Magistrates’ Courts for offering bribes totalling $8,000 to his supervisors on three occasions over a period of 18 months for arranging him to act as and get promoted to assistant supervisor.

A former head chef and two former managerial staff, who were among a number of former employees of two Japanese ramen shops charged by the ICAC with conspiracy to steal cash proceeds totalling about $190,000 from cash tills and bribery for conniving at the misappropriations, were today (February 9) sentenced to jail terms ranging from six to 13 months at the District Court.

The proprietor of a window maintenance contractor, charged by the ICAC, was today (February 9) sentenced to nine weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for 12 months at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts for forging two quotation documents of another contractor for a window inspection and maintenance project of a government-aided primary school. The offences were revealed in the course of a corruption investigation by the ICAC.
